New Tesla Model Roadster Sport Is Introduced

Tesla Motors isn’t a household name for most car shoppers but it is a car company that has been making a small but important impact on the way cars are designed and built these days.

Based in California but assembling cars in the United Kingdom Tesla Motors has the distinction of being the first company in the modern era to produce an all electric car the Tesla Roadster. Released in Summer 2008 the 109000 two seat sport car has gained a reputation for being fast clean and extremely fuel efficient running on pure electric power and doing that with style.

Now Tesla is taking orders for a sport version of its beautiful two seat roadster calling the model the Roadster Sport to reflect the improvements made with this model.

Tesla says that the Roadster Sport does 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds compared with 3.9 seconds for the standard model. It comes equipped with a handwound stator and increased winding density for lower resistance and higher peak torque. In addition to Yokohamas Ultra High Performance tires the Roadster Sport has improved suspension with adjustable dampers and antiroll bars that can be tuned to the drivers preference.

This car can beat nearly anything in its price class yet it is twice as efficient as compact hybrid sedans said Michael van der Sande Teslas senior vice president of global sales service and marketing. If you refuse to compromise on performance or the environment the Roadster Sport is your only option.

To date just 150 Teslas have been delivered with more than 1100 people on the company’s waiting list. Those people waiting who want the Tesla Sport can upgrade their order which brings the final price to 128000. Delivery of the Tesla Sport will commence in June 2009.

The Roadster Sport embodies Teslas spirit of continuous improvement said CEO Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. The Roadster has been a great success but no one at this company remains satisfied with the status quo.

Additional electric car models from other manufacturers are in the works including from Fisker Automotive. Tesla also has plans to sell a five passenger sedan the Model S a car that is expected to be available in 2011.
